What Does a Sump Pump Do?
Sump pumps are composed of two integral components: the sump and the pump.
- The sump is a deep hole in your basement where water can get sent during a flood. Your basement is the lowest part of your home, usually underground, and it’s the perfect target for flood waters which is why there needs to be a place even lower that can collect the water. This is the function of the sump.
- The pump functions using electricity to push water out of the sump and somewhere else on your property, usually to a local pond or stream where it can be sent away from your home. Some people even use the pump to funnel water to a nearby garden where they can help their plants grow!
Why Invest in a Sump Pump?
Flooding is a near constant problem during our spring, summer, and fall in Finger Lakes. With storms and weather events getting more erratic and unpredictable, it’s always good to have a safety plan in place. A sump pump will work diligently to keep your home protected from flooding waters that could ruin whatever is in your basement–from antique furniture to electrical setups like televisions and lights.
A sump pump is a powerful piece of preventative equipment that is designed to keep your home safe. It’s hard to put a price on such a valuable proposition.
Can I Install This Myself?
The answer is no, but it’s complicated. The installation of a sump pump takes rigorous hours of work, from drilling a hole where the sump will be installed, to the setup of an electric pump that can move the water outside of your home when a flood occurs.
This is just not something that is easily performed by a DIY enthusiast or even an amateur plumber. Only licensed journeymen and master plumbers have what it takes to provide proper installation of these complex devices. And don’t forget that we offer free estimates with every installation so you can ask us first before making any decisions.
