Boom! Boom! Why This Furnace Sound Is Alarming

If your furnace is making a booming sound, you need to call for furnace repair in Brighton immediately. Both gas and electric furnaces can boom during operation, and it is concerning whether you hear it once or multiple times.

Keep reading to learn more about why your furnace may be making a booming sound and why this is so concerning. Knowing when to call for service early can save you the headache of facing a total breakdown, fire hazards, or even health issues.

Electric Furnaces Booming

If your electric furnace is booming, there’s a chance that something is wrong with the motor. However, it’s equally possible that you have buildup on the heating elements that are popping or booming during a heating cycle. If you suspect that this is the issue, you can always turn your furnace off completely and then open the cabinet to your furnace to inspect the burners once they cool down.

If there is a buildup, you can try wiping it off to see if this fixes the booming sound. However, there’s a chance that the buildup has already burned on and left a residue behind. If this is the case, or if you suspect that something else is causing the booming, you need to call for professional service. If the booming continues, whatever is causing it could leave lasting damage inside your furnace or even cause a total breakdown.

Gas Furnaces Booming

A booming sound is concerning no matter what type of HVAC system it comes from. However, a booming sound in a gas furnace is a little more serious. It can indicate that explosions are happening inside the heat exchanger at the beginning of each heating cycle.

These explosions can strain your system and cause the heat exchanger to crack, ultimately allowing carbon monoxide fumes to leak into your home. This is a serious concern for two reasons.

First, these fumes leave you at risk for fire hazards since they are flammable. Second, breathing them in can also make you very sick. Since natural gas is odorless, you may not even realize you have a leak until you or someone in your family is already unwell.

Prioritizing Professional Service

We encourage you to prioritize annual maintenance for your furnace, even if it seems to be operating perfectly without any issues.
