Is Now the Time to Upgrade Your AC?

Has your air conditioner been giving you problems this summer? If so, it may be time to make the switch to a newer model. Of course, it’s also equally possible that some simple repairs can keep your air conditioner running great for next year.

You can keep reading to learn more about some of the signs that can indicate it’s time to replace your air conditioner instead of investing in repairs. Give our team a call to schedule your in-home assessment for Finger Lakes HVAC installation and we can help you decide between repairs and replacement.

Common AC Problems

If your air conditioner is having problems with operation, it may be time for a replacement, especially when you combine air conditioning problems with other factors that we are highlighting below. More serious AC issues include consistent problems with weak airflow or airflow that is lukewarm instead of cool.

If your air conditioner is making loud noises, that also points to serious concerns. Loud noises mean that something major is going wrong. If you’re having problems with large components like the motor or the compressor, it may make more sense to invest in an upgrade rather than a repair. It’s also a red flag if you’re having to make repair after repair without ever seeing long-term results.

Before you panic, remember that sometimes AC issues can seem like a big deal when there is a relatively simple fix available. Don’t panic if your AC stops working. Let our team check it out and then talk to you about what’s going wrong. It may be as simple as repairing or replacing a component or resetting your thermostat.

Repair Costs

You also need to be aware of how much you are spending on air conditioning repairs. Having frequent repairs that aren’t too expensive individually may not seem like a big deal. But over months and years, repairs costs can add up quickly. Facing a single expensive repair is also concerning.

By the time you invest thousands of dollars into repairs for an air conditioner, that is already older, you can put that money toward a brand-new unit that has a manufacturer’s warranty and better overall energy efficiency. We typically recommend that you not spend more than 50% of the cost of a brand-new unit on any repairs. This could be a single repair or multiple repairs over a short period of time.

System Age

Air conditioners usually last between 10 and 15 years. As you get closer to that 15-year mark, it becomes increasingly likely that it’s time for a replacement. Even if your older air conditioner seems like it is working fine, an upgrade may still be a good idea.

Fifteen years ago HVAC technology was very different. Today HVAC technology is much better. You can get a more efficient unit that doesn’t need as much energy to operate. Plus, newer units are more effective at keeping your home consistently cool over the course of a day.
